What is a membrane switch

It is a user interface device, made up several layers, used as a switch to turn a device on/off.

Unlike mechanical switches, wich are generally constructed with copper and plastics, membrane switches are printed circuits on film, made of various layers laminated together.

The layers of a basic membrane switch construction are: a membrane overlay, spacer, printer circuit, rear adhesive and tail filler.

Depending on the environment and requirements of the application, the construction can be different.

For examble, if shielding is necessary, a two-circuit membrane switch design would be a better construction choice.

 

TACTILE MEMBRANE SWITCH

Tactile membrane switches have a unique tactile feeling partly generated from the metal dome.

NON TACTILE KEYPADS

Non-tactile membrane keypads are a perfect solution for applications requiring a thin and flat surface.

  • simple construction and does not require a metal
  • little to no tactile feeling
  • remarkably cost-efficient

 

CIRCUIT TYPE

We offer membrane switches on two circuit types:

Flexible silver on polyester (PET)

Flexible printed circuit board FPC

 

Conductive Silver Ink on Polyester Circuits

The most common choice because of their low cost.

They can include:

  • 5mm connectors
  • Side & double sided circuit
  • Tri-color LED's
  • low profile 7 segment

FPC Membrane Switch Keypad

For more stringent environmental requirements, the printed silver circuit can be replaced with a copper and polyimide construction (Kapton).

These construction designs offer:

  • advantage with regard to current carrying capacity
  • better resistance to moisture
  • much higher conductivity than silver on PET

FPCs can have multilayer constructions and allow for the soldering of active and passive components.

 

GRAPHICS AND BUTTONS 

Graphics overlay is the top layer in membrane switch assembly and overlay is the visual top component on a keypad.

Overlays can include product branding, full color design and logos to support the product.

Our suppliers can provide different finishes to meet your needs, for example: gloss, textured and anti-glare

Embossing, button response and lighting have to be considered during the design of your membrane switch keypad and graphic overlay.

 

Buttons 

Buttons can embossed as part of the graphic overlay, or soft or hard molded buttons integrated.

  • tactile feel is created by discrete metal domes, or formed polyester layers
  • button actuation force can be varied depedning on your needs
  • a tactile dome switch can be used when an audible click is necessary

Tactile Embossed graphics

A tactile dome is formed in the graphic layer to create a raised and tactile feel. Tactile domes are manufactured to exceed 1 million actuations.

Metal dome

Metal dome are typically the best choice if a good tactile response and click feeling is required.

Metal domes are made from stainless steel, Plated Nickel, Gold(Au).

The most used Four-leg (star) domes come in a 5mm-20mm range of size, 125-500 gf range of force and 3.500,000 or >1 million cycles.
